Belle's Book Club
led by Michelle Grajeda
Saturday, March 1, from 3pm to 5pm

For our fourth Belle’s Book Club, we will celebrate strong women, past and present, as well as welcome Women’s History Month. Like the heroine of our chosen novel, many women have felt imbued with a level of creativity that feels like both a blessing and–at times–a curse. In Laurie Lico Albanese’s Hester: A Novel, we follow a young Scottish seamstress whose flaming red hair foreshadows the vibrancy of her imagination, fueled by her own synesthesia and her father’s tales of magic and mystery. Isobel McAllister Gamble, Albanese’s heroine, dwells in 19th-Century Scotland before finding herself in a new world called Salem, whose 17th-Century witchcraft trials continue to haunt her, along with a young and passionate Nathaniel Hawthorne, who emerges in the absence of Isobel’s wayward husband.

Albanese’s work of historical fiction is infused with color, providing the perfect vehicle for immersing readers in the beauty of creativity and the courage of women who have stitched a path for all of us who wish to follow their brave steps. All who are 18 or older may join us in the discussion of Hester and all of its rich themes.

Upon registration, participants will receive a set of guided reading questions with a suggested reading schedule and recommended resources. On the day of book club, they will receive a special book club jotter in which to take notes; a custom bookmark; and other cute goodies apt for book lovers. For novel purchases, may we suggest ordering from Nowhere Bookshop or visiting your local Barnes & Noble!
